In 1988, Nintendo signed a contract with Sony to produce a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES. This lead to the creation of the Nintendo Playstation console prototype that never saw production due to Nintendo abruptly backing out of the proposed agreement.
Terry Diebold purchased the Nintendo PlayStation in 2009 from a bankruptcy auction and after years of touring the system, decided to put the prototype up for auction in February 2020 at Heritage Auctions.Via IGN
Today that very same prototype console sold for 360,000 USD. Making it one of the most expensive video game items ever sold. During the auction, other rare items like early copies of Super Mario Bros were sold as well.
